Carter G. Woodson's History
The school honors Carter G. Woodson (1875–1950), an African-American historian and pioneer in Black studies. He co‑founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915, launched Negro History Week in 1926—which later evolved into Black History Month—and earned a Ph.D. in history from Harvard in 1912.
Houston Independent School District’s Carter G. Woodson is now known as Carter G. Woodson PK–5 Leadership Academy. It has evolved from a K–8 to a PK–5 institution. Named in honor of a visionary scholar, it continues to serve predominantly Black and Hispanic communities, emphasizing leadership, cultural pride, and an inclusive approach to learning. Woodson’s enduring legacy lives on through the school’s programs, culture, and community traditions.
